Chris McClean : Internet Consultant

"How to save money when putting your business online"

  1. Have your copy ready in text format. This does not mean have a flyer that contains content for the website but an actual disk with material on it. Email your website copy to your webmaster. Why? Instead of your webmaster typing it, they can now cut and paste. I charge by the hour so if I have to type information you'd better hope I can type quickly.

  2. Scan any images you would like to use and email them to your webmaster. Once again this will save time on your bill because the webmaster doesn't have to do it. They can just take your image, do a little modification if it need be and bingo bango, it's ready for your website.

  3. Provide your webmaster with links to websites you like so they can get an idea of what you find appealing. In some cases your webmaster will offer to build something similar to what you would like and also what they think would add positive impact to your specs.

  4. Know what phrases a person would use to find you through a search engine. It best to build a website with the search engines in mind from the start so you won't have to go to another webmaster for those services and thus waste time and money. Review my simple search engine tips article at http://www.pertinent.com/articles/internet-marketing/articles/searchengine.asp.

  5. Know what sections you will have on your site. This will also help the webmaster in setting up a directory or navigational structure. When you make additions to your website at a later date, this will help the next webmaster by giving them a nice neat structure to update. So make sure that the site is setup in an orderly fashion with properly formatted and clean code and a structure that makes it easy for anyone else you may use to update your website.

  6. Know what you would like to do in the future so your webmaster can choose the right ISP for you. Moving a website can be a hastle and a waste of time. With proper preparation you can avoid having to move. Help me help you. Tell me what your future plans are – will you accept credit cards, do you want to update your website yourself or do you want to just have a website that just offers information with no need for feedback?

  7. Familiarize yourself with online publications that target your kind of market. You will need to know how to send out a newsletter because you know how important it is to have a list of prospects you can market to. Right? At our site you can find newsletters in many categories http://www.pertinent.com/

  8. If you would like the option to update a webpage on your entire website let your webmaster know in the beginning.

Do you know all the little tricks that make a site load faster, search engine friendly, user friendly? Do you know enough about visitor behaviour? Website promotion?

Remember that you know more about your product than a webdesigner. You tell them how you want your product presented and they should give you the pros and cons of developing a website to your specifications.

To get a website you like, one that is effective and one that won't send you to the poorhouse – have your materials ready and provide input from start to finish.
